In the year 2000, Global Frontier Missions was founded with the purpose of seeing disciples made and churches planted among the remaining unreached people groups of the world. GFM’s humble beginnings involved one missionary couple making disciples and planting churches in a few of the least reached villages in Oaxaca, Mexico. Hosting short-term mission trips and internships led more people to God’s vision and heart for all nations. This young couple started an ethnic Bible school to equip local leaders in evangelism, discipleship, and church planting among their own culture. They then felt led to start a missionary training school to equip even more people to go and serve among the 2.9 billion people that have never heard the gospel. GFMs staff and vision began to steadily grow….
In 2006, GFM began traveling into the 10/40 window where over 95% of the remaining unreached people groups live. After sharing the state of the world with short-term mission teams for so many years, it was time to go out into the harvest field and do something about it ourselves. We started in Morocco, and then went on to India and Thailand. As we scouted places to send potential short-term teams and long-term church planting teams, the Lord laid on our hearts the “THUMBs Up” vision. THUMB stands for Tribals, Hindus, Unreligious/Chinese, Muslims, and Buddhists. In 2008, we felt like the Lord was beginning to ask GFM to expand beyond Mexico to establish mobilisation, training, and multiplication hubs among each of those main religious groups……
In 2009, GFM began really seeking the Lord as to what the next step was in fulfilling this THUMBs up vision. While considering new locations in the 10/40 window, GFM leadership felt like God told them to consider the United States which sounded contrary to our vision of taking the gospel to the remaining unreached people groups. However, we researched and discovered that at least 361 unreached people groups were coming to the US as refugees, immigrants, and international students. The Lord began to change our hearts and missions strategy and we began dreaming about what would happen if we were able to make disciples of these people, and many of them returned to their own people as a witness for Christ.
As we began to understand globalisation and diaspora (movement of people) missiology, we saw how strategic it would be to not only send people TO the 10/40 window, but to welcome those that are coming FROM the 10/40 window. We developed what we called “the Jerusalem strategy”. When reading the story of the early church in Acts, we see that Jesus said that the good news would be preached to all nations starting in Jerusalem. Why there? Because Acts 2 tells us that in Jerusalem, there were people dwelling from many different Gentile nations. So, the disciples needed the Holy Spirit in order to fulfill the Great Commission and Jerusalem made a great launching pad since people from all over the world were living there. When the Holy Spirit shows up on the day of Pentecost, He starts sharing Good News in all kinds of different languages. We get the sense that some of those people began scattering from there to take Christ back to their own people like the Ethiopian eunuch did. So, GFM began looking for “melting pots” and economic/cultural/religious metropolises in the United States and throughout the world where God is gathering the nations.
In 2009, we launched our Atlanta, USA location followed by our Houston, USA location in 2010 which were our first two ministry hubs in the United States. In 2013, we sent out our first team to the 10/40 window to start a GFM location to focus on unreached people groups in South Asia which was the beginning of the fulfillment of the THUMBs Up vision. In 2015, we added Richmond USA as our next location in the U.S. as well as our next international base in Sydney, Australia. We look forward to establishing many more hubs to mobilise, train, and multiply disciples.
Over the past fifteen years, Global Frontier Missions has seen hundreds of people go through Short Term Missions Trips, Missionary Internships, and Missionary Training Schools. Many of those participants have been called to long-term missions and are working in different parts of the world. They are in places like India, Bangladesh, Tunisia, Vanuatu, Morocco, and Thailand serving with partner organisations such as Pioneers, Frontiers, Operation Mobilization, SIM, and Team Expansion. Others are involved through prayer, giving, mobilising, and welcoming refugees, asylees and internationals.
We are committed to reaching the remaining 6900 unreached people groups of the world and will always have a focus on places where there are no Christians or churches. Our goal is to see ethnic church planting movements started among all peoples of the earth. Pray about how YOU can get involved in reaching those that have never heard.
